In the Q&A feature series Tell Me Más, we have the pleasure of interviewing some of our favorite Latine artists. This month, we sit down with Melissa Ocasio, a Puerto Rican alternative indie artist who has been making waves in the island’s indie music scene. Melissa burst onto the scene with her powerful debut single “Agárrate,” a call-to-action song about the femicides happening in Puerto Rico. Inspired by a particularly devastating case, Melissa wrote the song in 2018. She wanted it to become an anthem, a warning to society that women are taking a stand against the patriarchy.
Moving back to Puerto Rico from New York in 2019, Melissa faced a difficult time in her life. But she used this period to focus on her creativity and began working on her music. It was during this time that she met her current producer, Rafa Rivera Rodriguez, and they started working together on “Agárrate.” The song became a turning point for Melissa, not only establishing her as an artist but also allowing her to explore her own beliefs and spirituality.
In 2021, Melissa made the move to Los Angeles with her partner to further her career in the entertainment industry. She released her debut EP “hola, impostora (hello, imposter)” in March 2021, which has garnered significant attention and praise. Melissa’s career has been blossoming ever since, and she recently embarked on her first tour “A Las Músicas” alongside Andrea Cruz.
Melissa’s music is a combination of alternative indie and electro-Caribbean sounds, influenced by her upbringing in a musical household and her love for Puerto Rican salsa and Pop en Español. Through her music, Melissa aims to inspire and empower her listeners, allowing them to feel and interpret her songs in their own unique way. With her talent and determination, Melissa is proof that dreams can become reality when you put in the hard work and trust the process.
In a recent interview, Melissa shared her favorite artists at the moment, including Phony PPL, MARO, and Japanese Breakfast. She also discussed how music has healed her, allowing her to heal her inner child. Melissa’s journey in the music industry is just beginning, and we can’t wait to see what she achieves next.
