The season of award shows is well underway, and for avid award enthusiasts, the question on everyone’s mind is, who will achieve EGOT status? The EGOT is the holy grail of showbiz awards and stands for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. Only a select few have reached this impressive feat – including icons such as Whoopi Goldberg, Audrey Hepburn, Mel Brooks, and Jennifer Hudson. This year, another name has been added to the list: Viola Davis, who won a Grammy in 2023 for narrating the audiobook of her memoir, “Finding Me.”
Interestingly, the term EGOT was coined by actor Philip Michael Thomas, who gained fame for his role in Miami Vice, back in 1984. However, he never actually won any of the four awards. The title of the first true EGOT winner was given to Richard Rodgers in 1962, after he won an Emmy for his original music for Winston Churchill: The Valiant Years. Songwriter Robert Lopez is the only person to have achieved EGOT status twice, winning each award at least twice, the most recent being an Oscar in 2018 for his work on the song “Remember Me” from the movie Coco. His wife and creative partner, Kristen Anderson-Lopez, has shared many of these accolades with him, lacking only a Tony to complete her EGOT status.
