Full Story

Mo’Nique has been candid about her love and sex life in her comedy specials, including her relationship with husband Sidney Hicks. As her new Netflix special, “My Name Is Mo’Nique,” premieres, let’s take a look at the couple’s 40-year love story.

The pair met as sophomores at Milford Mill High School in Baltimore, Maryland, in the early ’80s and remained friends throughout their respective prior marriages. After their marriages ended, they became roommates. Their relationship turned romantic when Hicks kissed Mo’Nique while they were sharing a bathroom mirror. They married in 2006 and welcomed twin sons, Jonathan and David Hicks, in 2005.

In the early days of their union, Mo’Nique and Hicks had an open marriage. They discussed their arrangement on their podcast, “Mo’Nique and Sidney’s Open Relationship,” in 2016. Hicks explained that their lifelong friendship allowed for flexibility in their marriage, and nothing could shake its foundation. The key to their open marriage working was radical honesty. However, Mo’Nique’s views on open marriage changed as she matured, and the couple no longer partakes in extramarital relationships.

Hicks serves as Mo’Nique’s manager and has tried his hand at acting. Mo’Nique brushes off any criticism she’s faced for what some feel is Hicks’s overbearing presence in the comedian’s business dealings. She calls him the best manager she’s ever had and credits their honesty and understanding of each other for their successful personal and professional relationship.

“My Name Is Mo’Nique” is streaming on Netflix now.
